Christmas Traditions present vs. 1950

Christmas Day is over. Santa has already visited and is back at the North Pole resting after his very busy night. You have cleaned up the paper, but how did you choose to celebrate this year? StrategyOne survey asked how people celebrated their Christmas and found that just over 1/2 of Americans choose to open gifts on Christmas Day. If you compare today's traditions to those in 1950, 53% opened up gifts on Christmas Day today, just like 52% did in 1950. But making the holiday on Christmas Eve is on the decline. 30%of Americans in 1950 started Christmas on Christmas Eve and now today that number is down to only 12%. Celebrating on both days is on the rise though with 28% opening some gifts on Christmas Eve and the rest Christmas Day where in 1950 that number was only 3%.
However you chose to celebrate this year I hope you enjoyed your Christmas and will continue to make your own traditions!

Loud TV Ads

So there you are watching a movie or a show on television and a commercial comes on and you are blown away because the commercial volume is twice that of the show. Oh - this is an annoyance at my house and I'm making a guess that it's that way in your household too.
Guess what? Harris Corporation took a poll on sound variation between shows and ads and 80% of viewers take some type of action. 40% lower the volume while 22% mute the TV and 17% change the channel all together. The poll also found that 60% of viewers have a negative impression of the product or service when the volume is increased. There are a few out there, 5%, that say the louder ads grab their attention. 5% vs. 95% - I think it is time to keep the volume the same for the ads, it may end up selling more.

Sad Sad Story

A 2 year old boy was punctured in the heart by a sewing needle, but that's only one of the 40 some others. Yes, 40 plus needles are in this 2 year old boy and the doctors started extracting the few that were causing immediate danger first and will try to figure out the rest later. This is very sad, but the worst part of this story is how 40 plus needles got into this boy. His stepfather claims that the boy's mother, in a trance, told him to stick the boy with the "blessed" needles to help the mother and stepfather stay together.
This story is so unbelievable and disturbing that I really don't know what to say. It is very sad and I really feel horrible for what this 2 year has already went through and will continue to have to go through. No matter how many times I hear stories like this I'm still surprised that something like this could even happen.

Arizona Teacher on Leave

An Arizona Choir Teacher took her students to a performance in Phoenix and thought that the nearby Hooters Restaurant was the only place around that could accommodate the large group after the performance for lunch. I have never been there so I do not know if Hooters is or is not the only place large enough, but the fact that this teacher took High School age students to this restaurant without parent permission was not the best decision. This teacher planned on retiring in January, so maybe she past the point of really caring about her actions or did not think the place was that bad. One may never know. You can read the whole story by clicking here.

Procrastinating Holiday Shoppers

Well it has been a while since we have looked at a survey, so here we go. In L.A. the Consumer Reports National Research Center did a survey and found that holiday shoppers are procrastinating and buying their gifts at the last minute. They found that only 12% of shoppers have finished Christmas shopping. Get this - they found that 40% of shoppers have not even started yet!
I do not fall in either of the above categories. I did start Christmas shopping in November, but I'm not done. I hope to be after this weekend though. Could the fact that people are not done shopping have any coalition to not having the funds or the time to finish until the last minute? Bills and life just sometimes get in the way, don't they! Oh the survey also found that 34% of shoppers reported that something they wanted was out of stock, shocking isn't it.
Good luck finishing your shopping - maybe I will see you out there.

How well do you know your Princess?

I would think with an 8 year old daughter I would be able to do pretty well on a Princess Trivia game, but after round 1 that was not the case. I finished my line of questions with an overall score of 3200 points, not enough to earn me anything, but it was kind of fun. Maybe you have some time to kill - try it for yourself - click here. And good luck!

Cut it Up or Not

You know there are probably a few credit cards you want to get rid of, but what how? I would normally cut them up like most people, but that may not be enough. Thanks to identity thieves we have to take each and every precaution to make sure we are not next. When you cut your card - separate the pieces or instead of cutting - shred it. Yes unfortunately this is the world we live in, so take the appropriate steps and click here to learn more.

A TV Special for Underwood

Carrie Underwood is spending her weekend preparing for her first TV special. "Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special" will be on FOX this Monday. I will have to work on getting the TV away from my husband on Monday night to watch this two-hour special. Carrie is set to perform some new and old tunes, but she has invited some guests including Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton. And get this she and Dolly will be teaming up to sing "I Will Always Love You;" that should be a great one to see and hear. Tough choice for some - Packers or Carrie? Personally I'll go with Carrie as long as I can get the TV.

Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert's "performance" was not by any means family friendly, so why there would be a parents group insisting that is cancellation was an "overreaction" is mind blowing. Was there a reason he needed to act as he did and do the things he did? If you can sing and he can - I don't think he needs to resort to the measures he did to entertain the audience on prime time TV. Not that it matters to Adam Lambert, but I will not be buying any of his music, attending any of his concerts or writing him any fan letters now or in the near future. Read more about this story.

Does Your Favorite Make the List?

Elf, It's a Wonderful Life or Christmas Vacation - none of these made number one on the list of the best Christmas Movies according to Inside Movies, but they are on the list. Is your favorite number one or did it even make the list? Check it out - click here.

Black Friday

It is the one day that I'm happy to wait up at 2:30 in the morning, okay maybe not happy, but willing. That day is Black Friday. I was in the mall before 4am on Friday morning with my Mom and sister and loving it! I got some good deals for people on my Christmas list and for me too. Most importantly we had fun and were done before noon with sitting down for breakfast included; that doesn't happen every year.
Black Friday is a chance to talk with complete strangers who all agree that we are crazy to be up so early and out shopping with some many other people, but we are still there. It is a time to see the Christmas Spirit in most people who just love to give and see the crabbiness in others who should just stay in bed. It is time to be really thankful for the cheery, helpful cashier that has to be working at these unbelievable early hours. It is a bonding time between my sister, my Mom and myself and it would not be the same if one of us would not be able to go. So as you can see Black Friday is not all that bad. Maybe we will see you next year?
You can read more about Black Friday around the country by clicking here.

Oprah Gives Her 2 Year Notice

This is it - Oprah is leaving broadcast television in September of 2011, yes 2 years from now she is leaving. The talk is going around that she is walking away from the talk show to be more involved in the Oprah Winfrey Network, which will replace the Discovery Health Network. If this is the real reason - the world may never know. As most people, I am working at the time Oprah is on, so I cannot tell you the last time I saw her show. Will this change affect me or you...I don't think so, but there are all the hidden aspects that come into play with this type of thing and time will really tell. You can read more on this by clicking here, oh and don't forget the "wonderful" comments after the story. :)

Are Kids Smarter than Years Ago

You probably have heard of the TV show "Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader," but is this just the way things are going that 5th Graders are smarter than we are?
I know I'm surprised to see the homework my 2nd Grader is bringing home compared to what I learned in 2nd Grade and I know I'm not the only parent that thinks this way. I'm a happy parent to hear my 3 year old saying that's a "S" or "U" or saying his ABC's, but I also know that he has to start doing these things to make sure he will be ready for Kindergarten. I cannot believe kids are learning to read (or have already started) in Kindergarten instead of just learning the regular old ABC's on Alphabet Island.
Do you know where you stand? Click here to find out more and take the quiz to test your modern vs. old-time days school smarts.

Be Very Very Careful

Facebook: a great place to find old friends, stay in touch with new friends and network with just about anyone. Then there is the side of Facebook that includes Mafia Wars, Farmville, surveys and games, which many people I know love to participate in, but be careful with these. Some of the games on Facebook are actually created by scammers that try to trick you into products and services.
Is it at the fault of Facebook that these scammers are doing the things they are because they are allowed in? Or does Facebook do a good job of keeping them out?
Well why not click here and read what Newsweek.com has to say about the subject and make your own judgement.
Or just enjoy the pleasure of good company on Facebook and if you are nervous about scammers then keep to the basics.

Worst of the Worst

Some people hate it, some people love it - Reality TV. There are a few that have held the test of time and for good reason, but others you have to wonder how they ever got put on the air in the first place. Actually after going through the list of the worst reality shows I wonder who would have ever thought of them in the first place and decided "yes, I think the American public would love to watch this." I can honestly say that I have subjected myself to some of the worst shows, but it was not for long. Check it out and see what I mean.

How to Dress to "Lose" 10 Pounds

Okay, you are like me, I saw this headline and it definitely got my attention too. We are always looking to lose some weight or at least look better with what God gave us, so that is really what caught my attention with this title. I may have to look at my wardrobe and spend a few dollars to update what is there, but at the rate I'm going I see this happening way before I see myself losing that 10 pounds. Maybe you are not like me and you can stop reading this right now, but if you are interested a little bit then go ahead and click here.

Black Friday - ALREADY!!

As we all know the day after Thanksgiving the day known as Black Friday is famous or infamous for shopping. Usually we wait for the newspaper on Thanksgiving Day to check and circle and plan out the next day's excursion, but this year Office Max's Black Friday's specials have been leaked out already. A little early for me as it is only October! But in case you are interested you can check more out by clicking here.

H1N1 Vaccine

Are you going to get the H1N1 vaccine when it is available? This of course is a an important question to think about, but now put your children in the equation. Are you going to give the vaccine to your children? The scare of H1N1 is definitely in the air and no one wants to get it or have there children sick from it. But is it worth getting the vaccine when you don't know the long term affects from it? I have discussed this with others and some are still up in the air and will wait to talk to their doctors 1st and then there are those that say no because we do not know enough. The thing is I have not talked to anyone that is a definite yes, so this makes me wonder. What are you going to do? I would love to hear some of your thoughts - email me at tena@cc1063.com or if you want to do more homework or just find out more on the vaccine click here.

"Whatever"

Almost half of Americans surveyed say the word "whatever" is the most annoying word according to the Marist Poll. What other words made the list - "you know," "it is what it is," "anyway" and "at the end of the day." I'm not sure these words make my list as the most annoying words, but I know the word "not" is.

Another study, but this is a good one!

Scientists from the Swedish Institute for Social Research have found that a better-educated wife makes for a healthier household. The researchers say that a man living with a woman without a high school education is 25% more likely to die within a decade than a man living with a college graduate. It may be because a more-educated woman knows more about good nutrition. And this study just backs up the other findings of how the choice of husband or wife influences that person's chance of dying early. And another study has already found that living with a husband/wife reduces a person's risk of an earlier death.
Know ladies you have proof that your brains are a benefit to your husbands.

A Fun One to Read

My mom's cousin's wife experienced it - she did not know she was pregnant until she went into the hospital with stomach trouble and came out with a baby. I know she is not the only one to experience this and there is now a show that highlights 10 women with the same "experience." You can read the story here. Or there is the option to watch the show on TLC, check your local listings. But the really fun part is clicking on the link to the story and reading the blogs below the story. It is amazing to read what people really think about the subject.

What to do with Pumpkin Seeds

It will not be long until you are cleaning out the inside of those bright orange pumpkins decorating your houses for Halloween. The question always remains as to what to do with the pumpkin seeds? Do you bake them? Throw them away? Plant them in the garden for next year? Or make pumpkin seeds brittle? Yep that's right. Pumpkin seed brittle, like peanut brittle. It just doesn't look as nice. I have not tried this recipe yet, but it has normal ingredients and sounds pretty good. Click here to see the recipe. Then when you make it - feel free to bring a sample over to share or just email me and let me know what you thought. :)

One for the Guys

Esquire has named the 2009 sexiest woman alive award to ..... Kate Beckinsale. For some reason I did not make this list, but some other notables that did make the list include Halle Berry, Jessica Biel and Charlize Theron. For the whole story click here. Oh and there are a few pictures for you there too.

When drinking has gone too far

A Florida man was attacked earlier this week by his girlfriend when he did not replace her beer that was in their fridge. The boyfriend felt she had had enough to drink so refused to go out and buy more beer. The girlfriend, not happy with his decision, swore at her boyfriend and left the house. When outside she cut off a table leg and threw it through a window. She is now charged with a felony for throwing a "missile" into a dwelling and still did not get her beer replaced.

Brad Pitt Honored

Brad Pitt was honored on Thursday for his work rebuilding New Orleans. He received the honor from the U.S. Green Building Council for the foundation he founded called "Make it Right, New Orleans." The Make it Right foundation has unveiled 14 eco-friendly and economical designs for duplexes in July and it built 13 homes so far with 150 in process. The average utility bill is only 13-dollars a month - could you imagine that?

Still on the Market

The housing market has been slow and that includes Walt Disney's birthplace in Chicago. The home has been on the market for a year and is listed at 199-thousand dollars. It was built by Walt Disney's father and Walt only lived there for 5 years before moving to Missouri.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Unbelievable, I'm so excited - Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs has been a book in my house since I was in elementary school and now it is on the big screen! I love this book and even read it to my daughter's class last year as a guest reader. I usually don't go to movies much, but I may need to make an exception and go check out Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs featuring the voices of Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris, James Caan and Andy Samberg. Oh, yes I will take my daughter with too.
You know they do usually say that the book is always better than the movie. If you have a chance to go this weekend - email and let me know what you thought.

The End

Well they announced the end was coming months ago, but Friday it came true. Guiding Light, that started in 1937 on the radio, showed the last episode of Reva and Josh and the rest of the cast. After 72 years, I think they have earned retirement.
I always enjoyed Guiding Light when I was home on summer vacation, it was one of my favorites. I have not watched it years because of work, kids and life, but it seems odd that it is over.
What now you ask - a new version of "Let's Make a Deal."

Patrick Swayze

Yes you remember him in Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Point Break and Roadhouse, but what about his personal life. I did not know he has no children and he had been married for 34 years. 34 years of marriage to one person in Hollywood is incredible! Unfortunately cancer took him away from his wife and the rest of the world to early at the age of 57 this past week. Sympathies to his family. Read more about his wife and how they met by clicking here.

Home Improvements

Well the kitchen is painted and my sister and I started the living room last week, but wouldn't you know we hit a snag! Doesn't that always seem to happen when you do home improvements - you think this should be an easy fix, but oh no - something underneath the wallpaper shows a different story. So here is what happened - There is one wall of my living room that is paneling. Instead of taking the wallpaper off and dealing with panelling I thought let's paint over it, but not so much. My sister painted it and you could see every flaw even more than before, so tearing off wallpaper was the way to go. Unfortunately the wallpaper is not the easiest stuff to tear off and we are still working on this project that we thought we could get done in a few hours. It's just the way it goes isn't it?

The predictions are out

The regular season of football has not started. The starters for the football teams have not played a full 3 quarters yet, but the predictions on who will win the Super Bowl are in. According to the Rasmussen Reports national survey of football fans the Patriots and the Steelers are tied with 14% of the vote that they will win the Super Bowl. Sorry Packer fans but the Vikings are in with 5% of the vote (Go VIKINGS) and the Bears with 3%. This is just a survey, so I'm not counting my chickens yet. Let's just watch and see. Click here for the full story.

Great Weekend for Hiking

We live in such a beautiful area and are blessed with great hiking trails. I hope to get a chance to take the kids this weekend to one of my favorite hiking spots - Whitewater State Park in St. Charles, MN. The weather sounds as if it is going to cooperate, so why not? I have heard Hixon Forest also has some great hiking trails to enjoy. Take your pick and get out there and enjoy for yourself the beautiful area we all take for granted.
Do you have a favorite hiking spot? Email me and let me know where it is.

Applefest

Applefest is approaching fast. It is only 2 weeks away, are you ready? Applefest is as close to a hometown celebration for me as it gets and I enjoy the King Apple Parade, spending time with friends and family and eating the caramel apples. There are those things you need to do year after year, but it with good reason. Come celebrate in LaCrescent with me and find out what is going on by clicking here. See you in LaCrescent!

Are you Happy?

Are you in the majority of Americans that like their jobs? The Clarus Research Group found that 88% of Americans are satisfied with their job. If you think about it we are talking about the place where you spend most of your time - don't you think you should enjoy it? I have worked at many different jobs and I can say I'm satisfied with my two places of employment. This is like a big weight lifted. It's just one more thing not to have to worry about. I hope you are satisfied with the place you spend the majority of your time, but if not maybe it is time for a change.

Cash for Clunkers is Back - Kind Of

No you cannot trade in your old clunker car or truck, but now the government is looking at those old appliances. You bring it in to your local appliance store of choice and receive $50 - $200 toward a replacement. Good Idea? It could be if the government worked out the bugs from the Cash for Clunkers program it used with the auto industry. Otherwise - look out appliance stores. Read more.

Say No to Lyme's

Gundersen Lutheran researchers have helped to produce a vaccine
Lyme's Disease in dogs. I do not have an animal that this will make a difference in my own life, but know enough people that this will be a great thing. I do know a few people that have been affected by the disease themselves and this stories most important line to me is "He now is working on a more accurate and user-friendly Lyme test for humans, he said."
I know there are people out there that are almost afraid to go hiking because of the fear of Lyme's. We live in a great area and it is a shame that we cannot enjoy it to the fullest because of fear of one little, very little, bug. If there would be a human form of the Lyme's vaccine I know a few people I'm calling to go hiking. Read the whole story.

After 18 Years She is Found Alive

As a parent, I cannot imagine having a child kidnapped. I really don't think any of us can unless we have been there. We have heard the horror stories of children being found dead or sometimes even worse never found. How do parents deal with this? How can you not believe when children are never found that they may be out there somewhere. The reality though is that parents never see those children again.
Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped in 1991, 18 years ago and she is believed to be found! There are DNA tests being conducted to be sure. What a relief to her parents! What a relief for her! After 18 years there is a lot to catch up on though and you cannot just go back to the way things were when she was kidnapped. This will be a very exciting, emotional, trying time for everyone involved. My prayers go out to them all. The joy of finding a missing child, but the anger of having 18 years taken away. You can read more - click here.

Now Time for the Good Story

This is an incredible story from the Nelson, WI area. I think the story says it all, so click here to read. There are still good stories out there!

A shake your head moment

I have gone to a dolphin show at the zoo and expected that it may be wet - how about you? I think the kids purposely sit in the front so they too can get wet. Do signs need to be posted for this obvious fact? Well of course! An Illinois woman is suing the Brookfield Zoo for a fall she had last year when the floor got wet. Read the whole story. It seems people get short on money and figure they should sue someone for something, but that's just my opinion.

Brooks and Dunn call it a day

What can you say about this one, but as a duo Brooks and Dunn have decided to "call it a day." They will release a greatest hits album in September and tour in 2010 (dates and locations to be announced). Even more reason to take advantage of the Brooks and Dunn show in Sparta. See the official announcement.

Discount Wedding?

Are you thinking about getting married or planning a wedding? You may want to think about traveling to Los Angeles, CA for the big day and save a little money. There is a 99 Cents Only Store that will be offering a wedding ceremony for couples on September 9th, 2009 for only 99 cents. The bargain chain is calling this day "the luckiest day of the year" and will have an ordained minister at the store on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills to all couples looking to call September 9th their anniversary.

I did not get overboard on my wedding by any means, but I did spend more than 99 cents, so I'm telling you this is one heck of a deal. Plus you can start your honeymoon right away since you will be in LA any ways. Hmmmm - something to think about.

They Apologized

At 1st when I read the headline of this story I was appalled, but when you get to the end you realize you can relax. Read the story.
So here's the scoop - a mother and her infant daughter (6 month old) went to Burger King and were asked to leave the restaurant because the infant was not wearing shoes. The employees said the infant was violating a health code and would have to leave. Are you kinding me? An infants feet are probably cleaner than most people's hands. Wow - a little too far, but as I stated earlier it gets better. Burger released a statement saying the employees took the policy too far and apologized to the mother for the experience. Much better.

Say it isn't so

The autopsy report says Billy Mays used cocaine before his death. Read the story. It's never good when someone so young, yes 50 years old = young, dies because of a heart attack. But it is even worse when the autopsy comes back and this person died so young because of his own stupid choice of using illegal drugs contributed to his death. We were all in disbelief when Billy Mays passed away late June. He was a great pitchman, so we could think of only good things about him, but this? I have a new opinion about Billy Mays and it is really too bad.

Cash for Clunkers

They say it will last until Labor Day - the next $2 Billion that is. I'm not so sure about that. Just think the first billion was gone (in reality) in a day or two how do they think $2 billion is not already spent or will not be completely exhausted in 3 weeks? My advise to anyone thinking about using the program - don't think, but act now! It really is all about the math. How much money ($2B) divided by an average of $4000 received for a clunker = 500,000 vehicles. That seems like a great number, but now take that number and divide it by the number of dealerships in the whole United States lets say 15,000 (which is probably on the low side) and you come up with 33.3 cars sales per dealership. And they think it will last until Labor Day? The good news though is the program did what it said it would do - get Americans out to buy new more fuel efficient vehicles.

It is about Time

The reports are in Paula Abdul quits American Idol after 7 years. YES!!! Paula has had her day, she was a great entertainer back in the day, but she did not shine as a judge on Idol. I'm not sure if it was just Paula or the combination of Paula and Simon that annoyed me more either way it is over. We no longer have to listen to Paula's empty comments to the contestants. She did a nice job of telling everyone something good about themselves, but nothing that actually helped them. I'm not sure how many times over the few years that I watched Idol that I asked why she was even there, but the question is who will replace her?
Victoria Beckham will be a guest judge, but no one permanently at this time.

What an awesome way to watch a concert! I had the opportunity with my friend Michelle to watch Blake Shelton from the Sky Box at Country Jam. Definitely the way to go! Here are a few views from stage left. Oh, by the way Heidi Newfield stopped by the stage to listen too.
Oh and the last two - What an amazing crowd! Can you find Waldo?

What Next?

I'm so behind in the times. Yes I still use a flip phone. Crazy I know with all the advances in cell phones like the Blackberry with a bit of everything available right at your fingertips, but when something works fine it is hard to let it go or replace it. Or I could say I'm just holding out for even better cell phone technology. Is it possible? According to MSN - Yes. How about a cell phone that never dies? What do you think about waving your cell phone to write messages or draw pictures? Is your screen too small to read anything - well what do you think about a piece of digital paper that pulls out to display your screen (see photo). Impossible you say. Nope already in the works and you can read the whole story.

New Name for Sears Tower

Are you going to Chicago? How about checking out the Sears Tower while you are there? Well not anymore. No, nothing happened to the building. It did not go anywhere, but on Thursday there was a ceremony in downtown Chicago to rename the Sears Tower to the Willis Tower. Read the whole story. Since the 1973 opening we have known the tallest building to be the Sears Tower, do the Chairmen and CEO of Willis Group Holdings think they can change the name of one of the world's iconic skyscrapers and people are going to call it anything but the Sears Tower?

Back to School Shopping Already?

Seems a little crazy to me, but people are doing it and some have already completed the task of back to school shopping. It's only July, school will start at the earliest at the end of August. Maybe it is the procrastinator in me that says I have plenty time to do the back to school shopping or maybe I just want to kids (and parents) to be able to enjoy their summer for as long as possible. So all in all - I'm meet you in the school supplies' aisle in August.

What to Do, What to Do?

Do you save? Do you spend? Do you pay off debt? I'm no expert on this subject but I can link you to the experts at MSN money. It is really a tough call for all of us when trying to decide what to do with the little money we have these days, so we are finding that we have more planning to do. Planning and careful consideration is definitely not a bad thing in this economic time or any other. See the whole story here.

Infamous quitters in Sports

Who would be on your list. I really don't have one, but I have heard of most of the players on the Fox Sports list of Imfamous Quitters in Sports. There is one former Packer that did make the list can you guess who it is? Well you can see how close your list is to Fox Sports by clicking here.

Another Great Week in Pictures

Just incredible pictures this week from MSN. There's the picture you see here from New York City to pictures from Michael Jackson's funeral as well as others from around the world. Which one is the favorite - as of this post it is the one you see here, but it's not the one I voted for. Check it out for yourself and vote for your favorite. Click here to view.

American Idol Tour Starts Sunday

The 2009 American Idol Tour will be starting on Sunday at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. The 50 date tour will travel across the United States before finishing up in New Hampshire on September 15th. They will be in our area on August 28th at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, on September 1st at the Target Center in Minneapolis and on September 4th at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Yum!

Oh it was so good. I had a chance to enjoy lunch at Riverfest today with my friends Kathy and Sue. Good conversation and food. I really like to go to the food and beverage area with the idea of trying something new, so I tried the Chatwich (Tenderloin Sandwich) from Drugan's and it was so yummy. Of course enjoying some of the favorites I have in the past is not a bad thing either, so thank you to Quillins for having the Blarney Bars with ice cream to enjoy year after year. It also helps to have a friend to share the scoop of cookies and cream and birthday cake ice cream that so nicely accompany Caramel Blarney Bar with - thanks Kathy.
Enjoy Riverfest! And Happy 4th of July!

It's time for Riverfest

The annual 4th of July celebration is back starting July 1st with Little Texas on stage at 10:30. The is the awesome food so many of us look forward to as always in the Food and Beverage area. Don't forget the kids when attending Riverfest because they will enjoy Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel, the clown Kenny Ahern, Hans Mayer or maybe the magician Mr. Steve. At 10pm on July 4th look up to the sky for the amazing fireworks display. There is so much more and you can view the whole schedule - click here.
Have a great Riverfest everyone!

What would you do?

Two employees at Orlando Central Florida Toyota on Monday noticed someone left a box behind. The employees decided to just leave it alone and figured the owner would come back to claim it. When no one came still on Tuesday the employees opened the box to discover $40,000 in cash. After finding the cash the employees could have split the money, paid off a few bills and so many other things, but instead they called the Orange County Sheriff's Office to report the matter. And as you would assume the dealership's general manager is very happy to to have employees that "do the right thing."
So what would you do? What if is is not $40,000, but maybe $10 in the container at the bank drive-thru? What would you do? It's not mine, so I sent it back.

As the saying goes...

It comes in threes. How many times have we heard this? Anything bad it seems to reference that saying. Well we lost 3 icons to the entertainment world this week - Ed McMahon (see more on Ed), then Farrah Fawcett (see more on Farrah) and of course Michael Jackson (his bio).
Last week I had to do repairs on my TV (still not fixed), my washing machine (it's good now) and my refrigerator (not sure on this yet). So I'm wondering if bad things come in threes - should I be expecting another something in another set of threes? Something to ponder over the weekend.

No No No

What possesses some people to do the things they do? Breastfeeding your child a natural and healthy start to your baby's life right. But it is not when you are a breastfeeding drunk mother. In April this North Dakota woman was cited for doing just that and may now face up to 5 years in prison. Read the whole story.

It's Time for the Parade of Homes!!

This is something I look forward to every year. My Mom and I figure out some time to drive around and check out the homes featured in the Builders Associations Parade of Homes. It is a great way to find a builder, remodeler or some ideas for your own projects you want to tackle at home. This is one of the few times people open up their home for complete strangers to look around in and you know there is always that one house that you would love to see the inside of. This is it! Click here for all the information and see you there!

Is it the End?

I'm not a fan. I have never watched the show. But at least I know who Jon and Kate Gosselin are. The latest from People Magazine is that Jon went apartment shopping. Read the story.

Like I mentioned I'm not a fan, but I am married with only 2 kids (not 8), a job and other responsiblities and know how stressful it can be without having a television crew watching my every move. So I'm on the outside looking into this bad situation getting worse and thinking dump the television crew and work on your family. But that may be just me. Send me an email on your thoughts.

All Good Things Must Come to an End

There are certain items we all should think of investing in before the recession completely comes to an end, which the president's Council of Economic Advisors and the Federal Reserve believe will end sometime this year. Forbes has put together a list of the top 10 things because of the great "sales" on them right now.
Here are a few on the list:
1. Houses
2. Automobiles
3. Diamonds
4. TV's
5. Furniture
6. Women's clothing
Now we just need to harvest a little from our money trees in the backyard and we will be ready to go shopping!

A Little Too Far

PETA is not really happy with how President Obama handled a pesky fly during an interview with CNBC. How did he handle the fly you may ask? Well like most of us he catch it and killed it. One less fly in the world oh well right? Oh, no says PETA. They would prefer that the next time this happens a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher be used. This catcher traps the fly then allows the person who caught the fly to let it go outside. Read the story.
It's a fly! They are not endangered. Why is it so wrong to kill a fly? I may need a little time to figure this one out, if I ever figure it out.

Alan Jackson Celebrates

Miss Manners says...

The question was brought to Miss Manners about kids opening their presents at their birthday party. I have a young daughter that has been invited to kids birthday parties and did not know this was an issue. Miss Manners answered this question by stating she was wondering who thought this was a good idea in the first place. She thinks kids to "exclaim over everything" they receive and sometimes the guests feel "strain to conceal envy" if their gift does not measure up to the others. You can read the whole column for yourself - just click here.
I think we need to also teach our children to be happy with what they have and sometimes seeing others get things helps us teach them that. Also what is wrong with children saying "thank you" to the giver in person. As we all know most kids are happy with anything - okay any toys, so as far as them being disappointed about a gift - I don't see that happen too much. I guess things will stay the same at my house - my kids will open up their gifts in front of everyone, so just call me old fashion.

They're Baaack!

Yup, the mayflies are back. I understand there is a benefit of having them around, important to the food chain and so forth, but they are not pleasant to have around. It's really not fun to fill up your gas tank in the evening while you are getting bombed by mayflies, so as always we live with and wait for the end of them you can click here to find out all you would like to know about mayflies.

WHY??

This story from Port Huron, MI started with an interesting case being investigated by police. Officials are reported saying that Shannon Rhodes told them a man came to her door a few months ago, sprayed her with fluid and then set her on fire. She was seriously burned and she has had police on a search for the suspect. Except...she now met with officials again and have lead them to believe she set herself on fire. What? She's been arraigned on charges of filing a false report and it could cost her 5 years behind bars if she is convicted.
Again - why? What possesses someone to do this to them self? I hope it is not for attention because there are much better ways to do that without hurting yourself or anyone else.

WELCOME WIAA

Yes there are more people on the roads, in the restaurants and hotels and we would like to welcome them all to La Crosse! Welcome to the athletes and fans of the Wisconsin State Track Meet held at the brand new Veteran's Memorial Stadium.

Ahhh... A Little Bit of Good News

How many times have you heard it - "I wish the news would not be so negative." "If only the news would just cover positive stories."
I was very happy to read a couple of stories in the past week on the front page of the Winona Daily News and the Houston County News that fulfilled that wish for many.
1. Last week (you may have seen it) there was a story in regard to a couple, Ken and Pat Pape, donating all the proceeds of their auction to the Church that they have been members of for many years. What a story of great faith in this economy. Read the whole story.
2. On Thursday the Houston County News featured a story about a director, John Haugan, for the Bluff County Learning Options - (LaCrescent Alternative School) retiring. The good news is not that John is retiring but that while he served in his position - he touched so many lives and "saved lives." What a great story about a genuine person who cares. Read the whole story.
I have had the pleasure of meeting all of the above parties that these stories were written about. The best thing about the stories is that the stories in the papers are not exaggerations, but definitely true, so share some good news with someone that needs it.

Susan Boyle Update

An anxiety attack landed Susan Boyle in the hospital earlier this week after finishing 2nd in the Television show Britain's Got Talent. Of course rumors start at the same time something "bad" happens to a celebrity and Susan is no exception. Concerns of Boyle's mental state and where she is going from here led to if she was invited to sing on July 4th at the White House for President Obama. And as we know with most rumors, they tend to be proved false. Entertainment Tonight reported that Michelle Obama's press secretary said "It's actually not true," but Susan's brother confirmed the report. Either way she will be in the U.S. when she appears on Larry King and Oprah.
Instead of trying to figure out what the celebs are doing before they know what they are doing, I'm okay with waiting. You?

Youngest Tweeter?

"Whassup World" - his first words? Max Armstrong announced to the world on Twitter that he and his mother are happy and healthy after his birth. Max is the son to Lance Armstrong and his girlfriend Anna Hansen and may be the youngest person ever to "tweet." Max even gave some credit to the nurse and doctor who helped with delivery. I'm impressed with the creativity of some people. How Lance decided to put the happy news on Twitter about the birth of his son though the eyes of his son - wow! The other amazing part of this story is the fact that the world knows about Max via internet social networks in such a short period of time. That's Crazy!

Were you one of the millions?

CBS aired "George Strait: ACM Aritist of the Decade All Star Concert" and the show proved to be a success. With the show CBS lead the Wednesday night ratings, but if you watched it you are probably not surprised. It was a great show and George's comment at the end that he was glad he got the songs before the other artist was right on. I felt the artist did a great job honoring George Strait and I would love to hear a few of the songs again on the radio or maybe Thursday night at Country Jam!

Can you feel it?

Festivals, softball games and practice, work in the yard, planting the garden, longer nights and nothing on TV but re-runs means one thing - SUMMER! It is wonderful! It is busy as always, but it is great to have friends over for a bonfire in the backyard or a grill out (or both if you can handle it). Summer seems to be the time that kids get to be kids (wait I think they always do). Maybe it is more like summer is the time when adults get to be kids again for that week vacation or just one day at the amusement park. But it is here. I hope you step back and smell the roses and enjoy your summer because before you know it - it will be over.

Breaking News....

Adam Lambert, runner up on this season of American Idol, is gay!?
Kara DioGuardi answered the question on Friday's "The View" - "He's gay."
I don't know if anyone is surprised with this revelation. He has appeared on websites dressed in drag and it is rumored Adam will make the "official" announcement in the upcoming Rolling Stone. Either way he currently has four songs sitting on the Billboard 100 with one song at 19.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

May 30th
Happy Birthday to Wynona Judd. She is 45.

Some Good from Facebook

Facebook, the popular social network, people either love it or hate it. But this time it is a good thing Facebook is around. After 27 years a British mother and son have reunited thanks to Facebook. Back in 1982 when the boy was three his father told the mother he was taking the boy to the zoo, but instead abducted the boy and took him to Budapest, Hungary. Since Hungary was a communist country at that time the mother's pleas for help produced nothing. The mother even asked then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for help, but again nothing.
Not until this week, after 3 decades, mother and son were reunited because his aunt found an internet link to someone with his name. And the rest they say is history.
I highly doubt this story will change the opinions of Facebook haters, but it does prove a point that is not all bad.

Danny Gokey Moves On

By now you have heard that WI native Danny Gokey was voted off of American Idol last Wednesday, but now what?
Well his next step is not involved with music, but with Sophia's Heart Foundation. Danny's wife, Sophia, passed away during heart surgery last summer and this foundation is set up for her memory. There is a website for the foundation that you can visit www.sophiasheart.org
I'm not worried that Danny will do something great with his music and this foundation. I, as well as many others, look forward to hearing more from him and about him. Good Luck Danny with all your future plans!

Danny Gokey Day in Milwaukee

Yes - Friday was the day for Danny Gokey in his hometown of Milwaukee. There was a mini-concert at the Summerfest Grounds, drop bys at the local radio stations, a stop at his church, parades, an appearance at Miller Park including the 1st pitch and singing of the National Anthem for the Brewers-Cubs game, but don't forget the stop at bronze Fonz.
Be watching with the rest of America to see Danny Gokey day cut down to a 2 minute segment on American Idol this Tuesday. I wonder if the Fonz will get air time?

Emma and Jacob on Top

As parents we spend hours, days, weeks wondering what name our baby. A name is not just a name, but what our children will be known as for the rest of their lives. So we think about what the names we have choosen rhyme with, who else we know with that name, how it goes with our last name and so many other things.
Well according to government released data the most popular baby names are Emma and Jacob. This is the 1st time Emma has held the number one spot, but for Jacob (I have one of those) this is the 10th year. What other names made the list - well try clicking this link to find the whole story. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/30624090/?GT1=43001

More Idol Rumors

Is Kara DioGuardi too much for American Idol to handle? We have all heard the rumors - Kara was added this season to replace Paula, Kara will not come back next season, Kara and Paula are fighting, Kara and Simon are fighting, Kara is...(you fill in the blank).
No matter what the rumors are I like Kara and feel she has some great freeback for the contestants and has bought out some good comments out of Paula. Paula will always be Paula, but it seems she has managed to bring a few helpful comments to this season's American Idol vs. just the smile and mindless chatter as in the past.
So who is Kara DioGuardi -
1. She is Regis Philbin's Cousin
2. She is a song writer. Writing songs like Ashlee Simpson's "Pieces of Me," Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away," and songs for David Archuleta, Carrie Underwood and Katharine McPhee.
3. And more rumors for you - she may start writing and recording with Jason Castro.

FDA Recall on Diet Pill

Hydroxycut, the popular diet pill, I'm sure we have all heard advertised is now being recalled. The FDA has linked the pill with reports of liver damage and other health problems. You can read the whole story at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30518843?GT1=43001

Hydroxycut was always advertised as the all natural weight loss pill and at least 9 million packages were sold - WOW! This is troubling. One death may be due to this weight loss pill. What are we missing? Isn't this stuff get tested before it is sold to innocent people - I guess not according to the story. Why? The pill is advertised as a miracle pill for some people and here to find out it may have caused so many more problems than just a little extra weight. It is very sad.

Prom, graduations, sporting events, dates and other multi-student activities in some areas are taking a back seat to the swine flu. Unfortunately some students are putting their lives on hold while the whole world figures out swine flu. The good thing is that the events are getting canceled and schools are doing their part to keep the flu from spreading.
Can you imagine not having a graduation ceremony, but instead receiving your diploma by mail or what about not having your senior prom? Hard to imagine if you don’t have to but a reality for too many.

New meaning to "Green" cars

Race car designers in Britain have designed an entirely organic vehicle. This car has a steering wheel made of carrots, a body made of potatoes and a seat made from soybeans. It uses plant-oil based lubricants and a biodiesel engine that can run on chocolate and vegetable oil . (What a waste of chocolate though!) The car was created by Warwick University's WorldFirst team and they hope it leads the way to other environmentally friendly race cars. And yes it is suppose to be as fast as the other race cars. Sounds tastey.
